Northeastern University student Melina Coy was going through family belongings when she discovered an old suitcase belonging to her great-grandfather that led her to a previously unknown chapter of Holocaust history.

Documents, photographs, and personal effects inside the suitcase pointed to her great-grandfather’s connections to Gideon Klein, a Czech-Jewish composer who perished at Auschwitz in 1945.

Coy presented her research at a campus lecture, where she described the emotional journey of piecing together history through physical artifacts. Her work has since attracted attention from Holocaust scholars and archivists.
